Bjarne Melgaard is going through a reinvention phase, which means he’s giving away his entire $500K wardrobe for free on Valentine’s Day at Red Bull Studios. Then he’s launching his new project: a streetwear line with an installation a department store at the same spot Thursday night. Then two painters offer unique takes on domesticity through still lives—Sydney Licht at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts and Crys Yin at Amy Li Projects.

Friday night, things get weirder with a dystopian video game from Jeremy Couillard at yours mine & ours, artwork lost in translation at Tiger Strikes Asteroid, and a late-night performance from Actually Huizenga and one-time-AFC-contributor SSION (video above). The weekend brings two more all-women shows conceived in response to Trump’s sexism: BODY/HEAD Saturday night at Be Fluent NYC and BEAT at On Stellar Rays Sunday afternoon. Lookin’ good, NYC.

The term echo chamber has been thrown around since Trump’s election. When applied by conservatives, it’s used mostly as an attempt to dismiss the alleged close-minded perspective of “coastal elites,” a critique with few merits, even if sometimes true.

The limitations of this critique are especially visible in Jim Torok’s current solo exhibition The New Age of Uncertainty at Pierogi.The work articulates progressive panic and anxiety due to our current political atmosphere through a series of text-based paintings and portraits. In many ways, the exhibition simply reflects back the liberal perspectives those in the New York art community already see daily on social media. This approach has some obvious weaknesses, namely preventing the show from landing a far-reaching political critique. Instead, the exhibition succeeds more as a portrait of a specific ideology and frantic psychological state.

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Manicures for the Post-Apocalypse

Finally, a week in New York City where there’s at least one totally worthwhile, low-key art event every night without too many #FOMO -inducing major scheduling conflicts. We’ve picked out the best of the best, including such different activities as a pop-up opening party at Babycastles with a Kawaii nail art bar on Monday night and an artist talk from painter Keltie Ferris at the New York Studio School on Tuesday.

Wednesday, check out Lauren Marsolier’s suburban surrealestate at Galerie Richard, and Thursday night head to the West SoHo zone for solo shows from Sam McKinniss and Philip Vanderhyden at Team Gallery and Mumbo’s Outfit, respectively. Friday gets a little more hectic, with an exhibition of the late, great Tetsumi Kudo’s work at Andrea Rosen, an architectural “performance” from Gabrielle Mertz at the LES’s former PS160, and a group show about intimacy and craft at 315 Gallery in Brooklyn.

Saturday, two group shows open in a former Pfizer plant on Flushing Ave (where we expect artists to take full advantage of the post-industrial setting) and Sunday Pierogi has a solo show of drawings by John O’Connor. What a good week, and just think—you’ll have bomb nails for all of it.

Well, good. Postmasters’ Magda Sawon announced over Twitter yesterday, that SEVEN will participate in New York’s upcoming fairs. This means we’ll have at least one event to attend that resembles an actual exhibition, in addition to Frieze and Pulse, which run May 4th through 7, and 3rd through 6th, respectively. SEVEN launches April 28th and runs through the middle of May.
